A silver, blazing aura of energy erupted from Celeria as she blasted off into the air, followed in stride by the members of her team. They flew in the direction of the West Station. However, they did not fly at full speed.

"C-Commander, I must ask as to why we're not flying at full speed, the Colonel said it was a priority to-"

"We're not flying at full speed because it ruins the element of surprise." Celeria interrupted.

The remark came from a tall, albeit somewhat slender dark-haired young man with an eerily familiar face. Ah, of course. It was the Colonel's son, Colly. She had only read his basic file prior to the mission. But how come he got assigned to her team? Brokka apparently trusted her more than she thought.

And come to think of it, the majority of the team wasn't exactly experienced. They've seen their share of battles, of course. They were obviously hardened. But they didn't seem like a bunch to be carrying out direct orders from Frieza.

"Officer Colly, was it? You see, the element of surprise is more than just a tactical advantage. It's also terribly fun." - Celeria added as her lips drew into a contented grin.

"Right, Commander." Colly smiled warmly.

Curses, it was weird to see that face smiling in such a way.

"We'll soon be arriving to our destination. Ready yourselves, men. It's bound to be a bumpy ride." Celeria spoke to all her of her teammates. with more than a hint of eagerness.

"We can handle it, Commander." A somewhat cocky voice darted from behind.

"For your sake, you better. 'Cause I'm not hauling your collapsed arse back to the transporter. Now, let's get a move on." Celeria chuckled and increased her speed somewhat. The rest of the team followed closely.

In a matter of minutes, they were hovering silently above the West Station. They were all looking down upon the outpost and the guards scattered around it.

"And... begin." Celeria commanded, grinning.

They all began descending in unison. Within seconds, an array of blasts thundered all around. Blinding flashes of ki exploded in a staccato of destruction. Since there was no telling as to how many guards there actually were, Celeria had chosen the scatter formation. They would attack in unison, from all sides and then regroup where resistance was strongest, crushing it efficiently.

“…He took down 200 Arachnerods, alone.”

“I heard 300. And then I heard that he took out the queen by force feeding her with her own youth.”

“Man, the Colonel is a living legend, do you think we’ll get to see him do anything like that now? That’d be a story to tell to my daughter. I got to see Colonel Brokka force feed a space spider its own youth!”

“Whatever happens it’s gonna be big. Word on the grapevine is that Colonel Brokka ain’t conscripted to an assignment unless it’s the toughest kind.”

Brokka blasted ahead of his team, his aura exploded and fizzed with his roar power which propelled him further and further towards the east base. He couldn’t however, keep himself from picking up on the stories that were circulating at the back of the group. Morons, he thought, briefly shaking his head. The stories of his exploits were dramatically exaggerated, now even to the point that he himself hadn’t heard these versions of events. The Colonel of course remembered battling the Arachnerods, a humanoid race of arachnids who made their home at the edge of the North Quadrant. But he hadn’t faced the trial alone, he’d made apt use of his forces to obliterate the queen’s armies and starve its people of the resources required for battle. Of course, he’d killed many Arachnerods, and probably more than 300, but never alone, and certainly not in the same sitting. There had been many casualties during that mission, but without the sacrifices, Brokka wouldn’t have won. After a moment the Colonel grinned, his legend was now even illusive to him, there was a pathetic hilarity about it all.

“Did you hear about the Aquiriems and how he-“

The Colonel turned his head to identify the source of the tales.

“Shut up. He heard you.”

He grinned again, before continuing the flight. After a couple of minutes the installation was in sight, and the plans had already formed in Brokka’s head. From his vantage point in the sky he could see heavy artillery dotting the outskirts of the base. Shame it wouldn’t even scratch his men, such weapons were effective only against lesser warriors. What was toward the centre of the base however was of primary interest. A tall pillar extended from the ground and rose to hundreds of feet. At the top was what looked like a kind of energy beckon, no doubt the source of the barrier defending the north installation? It wouldn’t be wise to simply target the source however, that could detonate the entire base and jeopardise the mission, Brokka had another plan.

Suddenly he stopped mid-air, and signalled his troops to do the same. They followed suit abruptly and awaited orders.

“You three, a ground assault.” He pointed. “I want you to storm the droves of guards. Kill everything, but don’t target structures.” The soldiers saluted and quickly descended, not a word was spoken in objection. “You two, you’ll follow me. We’ll enter the installation, when inside destroy everything and everyone. Before we deactivate that energy generator, I want them all to suffer.”

“Aye aye!” Said a woman closest to the Colonel.

In seconds Brokka and his men has stormed the base. The ground crew cut through the defence like butter, drove by drove the enemies fell, decorating the battlefield in their worthless remains. As Brokka landed towards the installation entrance, two guards attempted to flank him. Quickly the Colonel turned on his heels and saw two helmeted aliens of red skin. Both men fired a volley of blaster bolts at the Colonel, but they disintegrated as they made contact with his armour. Brokka smiled and spat in response to their futile attempts. In less than a second he dematerialised and reappeared behind the two guards. A clenched fist drove right through the body of the first guard, and the second one felt lifeless with a clean snap of his neck.

“Child’s play. Freeza sorely underestimates the Saiyan race…” The Colonel sniggered and moved inside the installation with his two soldiers in toe.

This was too easy, Celeria thought to herself, as her team easily assumed dominance over the surrounding guards. Their aim was poor, their formations too open. Something was definitely off. While the others were busy satisfying their bloodlust, Celeria decided to indulge a nagging concern in the back of her mind. She couldn't shake off the feeling that she wasn't seeing the complete picture.

"Colly, Zuki, Chaya, with me!" she instructed via scouter. The three soldiers whose names were called instantly separated from the group and accompanied her into the structure. When they finally got inside, the mystery grew deeper.

Despite the fact there was a considerable number of guards posted outside, inside the structure seemed completely deserted. Celeria didn't like this.

"Commander, with all due respect, the fight is outside." Colly muttered while they ran through the main corridor.

"I am well aware of that, private. And it's what worries me." Celeria grunted.

Fortunately enough, she recognized the outline of the station. It was indeed an outdated structure, the kind of which they presented to young soldiers in the early days of military academy. But Celeria never thought she would actually find herself inside one. Why would anyone set up their base in this derelict ruin?

It did not take them long to reach the control room. Celeria immediately seated herself at the main console. As her fingers flew over the keys, she realized the interface was an equal piece of junk as the building in which it was situated in. There was only one feature that was actually functional - the radar. And it was beeping. A cluster of unknown objects was approaching the station at an alarming rate. Celeria zoomed out onto the perimeter of both stations and realized that there were actually two concentrated clusters heading to both the East and the West station.

The Commander sprung from her chair and immediately blew a hole in the outside wall, much to the surprise of the officers surrounding her.

"Commander?" A young woman looked at her, visibly perplexed.

"Missiles." Celeria zoomed in on the approaching rockets that were now in plain sight. And soon, she was able to figure out their type. Celeria's eyes widened in unpleasant surprise.

"Photon missiles, DARN IT."

Celeria immediately clicked her scouter several times.

"Brace for photon impact, I repeat, brace for imminent photon impact."

She then changed the frequency.

"Colonel, class 4 photon impact imminent. I repeat, class 4-" The line went dead, the static charge of the rockets no doubt messed up the transmission. Celeria stopped and counted a dozen. Down below, several saiyans already fired a round of ki blasts, but Celeria was well aware it wouldn't do any good. The static charge afforded the weapons their personal energy barrier. To make things worse, Celeria doubted some of these soldiers had even seen a photon missile, let alone withstood one.

"Follow me!" She yelled out and jumped off the tower, landing softly on the ground and proceeding into a fast run. She aimed to place herself in the middle of the group. The three officers followed in stride. Most of the group were confused, staring dumbfounded at the threat which was nearly upon them. The others still tried to bring them down, visibly upset at the futility of their attacks.

"Listen closely! Energy barrier on my mark!" Celeria shouted.

She crossed her arms and waited for the missiles to approach. They needed to be countered at the right time, else the radiation might be able to penetrate a weaker energy barrier. Her job was to protect the troops and that was exactly what she intended to do. Thus, this would have to be timed perfectly. A few soldiers turned to her, confused as to why she hadn't given the mark yet. Fortunately, Celeria's peripheral vision had caught this.

"Stay sharp, damn you!" She snarled.

Just a little more.

"Three, two, one. MARK!" A torrent of silver ki erupted from her body and the other soldiers raised their own energy barriers in unison. A moment later, everything and everyone around her disappeared in a blinding flash of light, followed by a deafening explosion.

The interior was old and rusted, its walls were dim and musty like an old tomb or mausoleum. Brokka strode down an empty hallway and into what could only be the central control room. Silence loomed, and everything was not as he expected.

“Very clever…” He muttered to himself.

“Sir?” One of the soldiers quickly said.

The Colonel walked towards the degraded console and inspected the hardware. He smiled arrogantly at its sight, everything was so obvious now. This world wasn’t the homeworld of this rival gang, it was a wasteland. They had settled here only, most probably temporarily. The Colonel familiarised himself with the old interface and punched at the archaic digits. A display appeared on a flickering plasma screen in front of him, it displayed written information.

That’s useless, I can’t read most of this…. After a moment of failed interpretation, Brokka happened upon images throughout the text. They appeared to be visuals, and quite intriguing visuals at that. The Colonel saw a vibrant forest world, mountainous and saturated in water and life… Nothing at all like this world. But of course, it had been this world, generations ago. Something happened to this world, it looks like it’s already been ravaged… So why are they here now? After a moment’s contemplation, Brokka’s scouter self-activated, and he heard the familiar voice of the Commander. She sounded rushed, he could detect it in her tone long before he registered the words.

“Colonel, class 4 photon impact imminent. I repeat, class 4-“

Brokka’s eyes widened ever so slightly. A surprising move… Nothing had been activated at this installation, he’d been monitoring outside communications. It had to be from Celeria’s end, or the northern base. And in that case, it meant the element of surprise had been lost to his team. He clenched his fist, somewhat irked by the incompetence he was pinning on Celeria’s team. The Colonel’s aura blasted around his body, it’s clear white appearance spread like wildfire and burst in an amalgamation of shapes as he shot free of the building and out into the sky. His scouter was the first to detect a battery of photon missiles, there was seven in total, but he wasn’t deterred.

“Idiots… Firing on one of their own installations, they must be as desperate as they are stupid.” He extended a hand and quickly accumulated as much energy as possible. The exterior of the torpedoes were tough, and they were made with ki resistance in mind. Plus, he wasn’t foolish enough to detonate them when they were so close to him and his troops. No, his plan was to alter their trajectory instead. “Big Bang ATTACK!!!!” The ki ball left his fingers as a somewhat sizeable collection of energy. It travelled at unparalleled speeds and continued right past the torpedoes until it finally detonated. As the ki exploded it did nothing to damage the missiles, however it did change their course, just as Brokka had originally intended. Now, the entire battery of explosives was heading for the central tower, exactly where they needed to go.

BOOM

the tower went up in an impressive spectrum of colours, the noise quickly travelled to the Colonel’s ears and deafened him momentarily. As the blast and the sound subsided, Brokka was left with a dull tinnitus ringing away in his head. He grinned, and soon he saw his men making it clear of the entire installation. But there was still a few stragglers to be dealt with…

The Colonel travelled back to the surface and saw several installation guards fleeing. He cackled wildly as he fired a barrage of his own missiles. His ki traced the movement of each of them, and in tandem they all charred to a crisp, falling lifelessly to the ground.

After a few minutes the entire installation was nothing more than rubble, and Brokka completed his part of the assignment. Brokka activated his scouter and saw that the Commander had yet to destroy the second installation. He grunted, somewhat bemused. Finally he opened a channel to her, “The east installation is compromised. Status report Commander.”

The Colonel's scouter suddenly screeched with static.

Back at the East station, the flash from the explosion was replaced by a cloud of dust. Luckily it did not take long for it to clear. Celeria straightened her back and dusted herself off. She looked around and noticed ten slightly dazed, but very much alive warriors. The Commander, however, felt a little drained. She had done her best to extend her own Energy Barrier to shield more than herself and while she had succeeded at the task, she had sacrificed a significant deal of her own power. Celeria hoped she would manage to regain her maximum by the time they made the assault on the main outpost.

Her scouter started working again and transmitted the message from the Colonel. Celeria tapped it a few times:

"Area neutralized, Colonel. No casualties. Heading for the rendezvous point now."

"Everybody alive back there?" Celeria taunted with a grin.

"Alive and kicking, Commander!" An officer standing to the far back of the group yelled cheerfully. Soon enough, jokes and laughter spread through the whole team.

"Nice that you're all enjoying the fresh air, but we've got places to be. After me." Celeria grinned and blasted off into the sky, heading directly for the meeting point. She didn't hold back on speed and energy. She knew they were out in the open. And judging from what she saw in that tower, they've been out in the open before they even landed on this barren rock.

"Commander, why did you waste your energy like that?" She heard Colly's voice from her side.

"What do you mean?" Celeria turned to his side and raised an eyebrow at him.

"You know what I mean, Commander. Your barrier. It protected more than just you." He continued.

"Just doing my job, private." Celeria grinned.

"Isn't your job to waste this world and deliver it to Frieza?" He immediately followed.

"That and returning your arse back to the homeworld in one piece." Celeria replied, smiling. The look on Colly's face was one of utter confusion.

"I didn't realize the lives of soldiers were a priority." He spoke as if to himself, as his gaze fell and concentrated on blank a dot on the horizon.

"They always are, private." Celeria added, in a grave tone. "And anyone who tells you otherwise, well... their opinion might change should they ever face a Sergeh onslaught alone." She chuckled almost cheerfully, her hair waving in the wind.

At this speed, they were the first to reach the meeting point. The soldiers touched down and began pacing around in small groups or in pairs, while others sat down to catch a breather. Celeria herself found a protruding rock formation that made for a comfortable seat. But, at the last minute, she decided not to sit down. She needed to stay upright, arms crossed, the epitome of focus. If she relaxed, her team might follow suit, albeit a little too much. But she also knew that she had to rest, if even a little.

She walked over to a rock wall and leaned upon it, arms crossed and eyes locked on the horizon. There was a lot she had to say to the Colonel and she would have to make sure not to leave out a single detail, as this mission was getting more obscure and more threatening by the minute.

It wasn’t long before the small group led By Brokka convened at the rendezvous point with the second half of the unit. Brokka was the first to see Celeria’s team, already on standby waiting for him. Of course, he liked to make a conscious effort to assess his surroundings as he travelled, to possibly finish off any straggling forces. This often delayed getting from point A to point B by several moments, but of course, the Colonel was meticulous in his execution of a mission.

As his group joined the other soliders, Brokka casually touched down near his son. Colly looked him in the eyes and then commenced to lower his head as a sign of respect. The Colonel simply extended a hand and placed it on his son’s shoulder, trading him only a brief glance, as he moved through the group towards Celeria.

“Commander, what information –if any- did you retrieve from the westerly installation?” The Colonel positioned himself directly beside Celeria. She seemed focused, as if she was already considering the particulars of the assignment. Brokka grinned, perhaps he’d disregarded her usefulness too quickly? She’d been adequate in her delivery of the mission objectives so far, and now she seemed entirely absorbed in the next stage of the plans. The Colonel’s mind began to swell with ideas, he would find even greater use of the Commander before the mission was out, she simply had to continue doing as she was told.

Celeria kept her head somewhat lowered and her gaze locked forward. The desert breeze blew softly on her skin. Occasionally, specks of sand got in her eyes. Her discomfort about this mission grew deeper. Too much was off here. That station, the clear path to it, the deliberately obscure intel. Ever since they landed here, Celeria felt like a rat in a maze. She had no idea if the Colonel would listen to reason. Regardless, it was her duty to lay out her opinion on the matter. How the Colonel would go about it would be up to him.

"The station interface was active, but derelict. No information could be sent out. Only one function was operational - the radar. It seemed to me that the system was kept there just so we could see the missiles coming down upon us. Put simply, the stations were a decoy. I don't think we've even glimpsed at the challenge Marble laid out for us." She paused a moment as if in meditation, only to decide she would express her thoughts fully.

"If I didn't know any better, Colonel, I'd say we are walking into a trap. If we haven't walked into one already. We should probably fall back to the ship and devise a new strategy, send out scouts - find out exactly what we're dealing with here."

She paused again, collecting her thoughts. Her eyes went from one side to the other before she leaned in to the Colonel. Taking a deep breath, she slowly exhaled as she whispered to him discreetly:

"I don't think we've been sent here to win, Colonel. I think we've been sent here to die."

Brokka’s eyes scanned the silhouette of the installation in the distance. His scouter activated and it conducted a comprehensive scan of the base. As expected, destruction of the previous bases had led to the shields falling around the parameter. They had access, the red carpet had effectively been rolled out. And maybe the Commander had a point. Since they had arrived, they had been basically invited in. The installations were surprisingly unchallenging (although Brokka accepted that his ability level was far beyond any mission objectives that could be thrown at him). The interior of the base he had investigated had also been dilapidated and abandoned long ago…

As he had previously hypothesised, the Colonel was now more certain than ever that this world did not belong to Marble. The mission Intel was wrong, and Brokka wasn’t sure who was responsible for the misinformation but he had a fairly good idea. The Colonel raised both of his arms and crossed them against his chest. In that moment a gale-force blizzard exploded around him, causing his cape and mane of hair to billow wildly. This next decision dictated the success of the mission, and that of his own personal success.

After a second of cold silence, Brokka responded. “The Intel was wrong. I figured that out at the last installation. I also figured out something more, Commander.” He paused, turning toward Celeria. “This isn’t a base of war, this is far too underequipped. Freeza has no business sending Saiyan warriors after such a pathetic garrison of troops. My men practically flexed an arm and the opposition fell to their knees. No, this isn’t a military operation at all…” He smiled, but not in the amused sense, more so in the sense that he was accepting a great challenge. “Marble is here on an excavation. He’s looking for something, and Freeza doesn’t want him to have it. The PTO aren’t threatened by his forces, they’re threatened by what he might find.” The Colonel unfolded his arms and strolled towards the cliff precipice. “Call it… a hunch.” Of course he wasn’t being entirely truthful, he hadn’t divulged the images that he had happened upon in the east base to the Commander. They painted a more specific image of what Marble and his men were looking for. For the time being however, that knowledge would remain Brokka’s, and only Brokka’s.

“We’re going to stage a frontal assault. I’ll lead, you take the rear. If this is a trap I welcome it. We’re Saiyan, we don’t wait for an opportunity, we seize one. Ready the men, I want to address them one final time.” He continued to look out over the precipice. His cape flowed now more wildly than ever. The untamed weather was the perfect backdrop for what was to come…

Celeria's eyebrow slowly raised as the General proceeded through his reply from beginning to end. An excavation? Why not blow the planet up from space if something compromising happened to be upon it? No, this whole thing was making even less sense now. And a group of twenty warriors were about to plunge in headfirst into complete darkness without even a semblance of a clue as to what they might encounter there. Celeria grunted under her breath. She would leave the Colonel to his delusions of grandeur, she had a job to do.

Taking a few steps back to the congregation, she cleared her throat and addressed them all solemnly:

"The Colonel has just informed me we will be proceeding in a frontal assault. His team will lead and my team will make sure our rear is secure. Do not take this lightly, men. I have a hunch we have yet to see what's in store for us on this rock. Exert your power, but exercise extreme caution. Understood?"

"Understood, Commander." Most of the group spoke more or less in unison, while a few soldiers grunted under their breath.

"Now stand to attention. The Colonel wishes to address you once again before we execute the attack." She added and moved to the side, standing to attention herself. Despite her better judgement, she would have to go along with the Colonel's plan. Regardless, she intended to do her best at fulfilling secondary mission objectives - preserving the planet for the PTO and making sure their team numbers remain intact.

“Men…” The Colonel said with affirmation. “Kill them, kill all of them. Nothing must remain, we must wipe this pathetic stain from the face of the galaxy. Because then, and only then will you all become champions.” Brokka moved in with slow but confident strides and walked a perfect line in front of the congregation. “The story of this day will be told in the bars and on other battlefields. Just make sure that when they tell it, you are the main character.” He smiled, that would be enough to enthuse these rabid grunts. Brokka knew that if he dropped the essence of power and glory of war in front of any of them (even his son) then they’d bite like a donkey gnawing at a carrot, so easily done. Now, it was time for him to destroy Marble…

The Colonel’s energy blasted around him and distorted the winds that had ravaged his body. He hurled himself into the air and fired off in the direction of the north installation at the height of his speed. Quickly the others followed, Celeria took the rear and his team made a close formation behind him. In seconds the three mile journey was cut to nothing and he saw absolutely no artillery or soldiers lining the parameters. The Colonel suddenly stopped, and he went from terminal velocity to complete stillness in an instant. His team immediately followed suit.

Brokka’s eyes wondered the installation, and then they searched the faces of his team. Everyone was cautious.

“So you come at last!” A voice bellowed with immense volume from inside the installation. “Well, I did leave the front door open for you, so I expected nothing less.” Brokka grimaced, what sort of game was this? Cowardice? Treachery? He clenched a first and began to hiss in fury.

“I knew Freeza would send the Saiyan race, that’s why I laid out this rather elaborate breadcrumb trail… Aren’t you at all curious about why you’ve been led here? Don’t you want to know the details? What is your real mission objective? I bet your superiors lied…” The voice echoed through the surrounding forests and alleys and it irritated Brokka’s ears. With a two finger signal he positioned every soldier to the ground, they were storming this installation regardless of the ‘real’ objective.

As Brokka landed he immediately began sprinting, his fists were readied and his teeth gritted as he entered the outer grounds of the north base. As he exhaled his breath evaporated into ice cold vapour, but before he could coordinate an attack on the base his scouter alerted him to a troubling presence. As if from out of nowhere, fifteen large power levels converged on the base. Brokka read ‘7,000… 5,000… 6,000...” So this was what Freeza was hiding! Armoured troops of blue scaled skin appeared as if from nowhere, and they were charging against the Saiyans in no time flat.

“Bring it on!” The Colonel’s rage exploded, his muscle mass temporarily expanded and his aura burned like a flame around his being. He met the first troop blow for blow, he was skilled, but he would soon shatter…

A trap! She knew it! Celeria's muscles tensed instantly as she looked around at one of the grunts creeping behind Colly. She ran straight for him, pushed Colly aside and crashed head first into the alien, who recoiled backwards from the impact, but looked otherwise unfazed. A trickle of blood came down her forehead. Damn it all.

"Not even a scratch!" Private Chaya yelled out.

"Commander, w-what's going on?" Colly looked at Celeria, eyes widened in disbelief.

Celeria growled. Her adrenaline skyrocketed. She felt the air grow cold with the promise of death. But by her pride and honor, it would not be her death.

"We've been offered to this ugly bunch. We're supposed to be free game." Her lips suddenly drew into a sinister grin as she cried out:"NOW LET'S SHOW THESE FREAKS WHAT WE'RE REALLY HERE FOR!" She lowered her voice before snarling:"Show them no mercy."

A violent aura of sheer energy eruted around her. The rest of her team roared their battle cries as they powered up and dove into the surrounding ring of enemies that was locking around them. Celeria's fists glowed with ki as she took two of the aliens head on. An assessment of the situation revealed they were somewhat outnumbered, but numbers meant nothing when the tactic was good.

"Stay together! No matter what, don't let them break our formation!" Celeria ordered.

The team formed a ring within the enemy circle, they would deflect their attacks as a joint effort, so the weaker warriors among them wouldn't compromise the rest of the team. The bad side was that they had been effectively cut off from Brokka's unit.

As the fight raged on, Celeria began to notice that her unit was getting tired. They were becoming sloppy, making clear misses and taking far too much damage. Celeria herself found it hard to stay toe to toe with the attackers. They were fearsome creatures, mounds of muscle with pitch black orbs for eyes. The most frightening aspect of them was their apparent lack of a mouth. They were silent, like shadows. And they engulfed them like shadows. She deemed herself a good fighter, yet she took more hits than she would ever be able to admit. It was like they were two steps ahead of her, even when she was executing complex combat maneuvers.

One grabbed hold of Celeria's arm. Another grabbed her other arm. A third one used the opportunity to land a direct hit into the pit of Celeria's stomach. Celeria keeled over from the impact, spitting blood into the alien's face. She then stared him directly in the eye and powered up, repelling the other two with the sheer force of her ki and proceeding to eliminate them systematically. But as she executed her third opponent, a fourth one grabbed her by the throat.

As she was lifted up, she saw that the ring was effectively broken. Her team had been cut in half. The half that remained was already as bruised and bleeding as she was, if not worse. The bodies of the other half laid strewn across the ground. They were falling, one by one. Celeria's mind flooded with despair. She grabbed the arm of her attacker by the knuckle. Her muscles tightened and so did that of the creature. Her face contorted into a grimace of pure hatred as she powered up and tore off the creature's arm from his shoulder. She then smashed him across the face with his severed limb. However, as she turned to regroup with her team, two more enemies were upon her. As she cut her way through them, everything seemed like it was in slow motion. She was making little to no progress, while they were falling. Zuki and Chaya were barely standing, but they were managing to hold their own. Two of the aliens were approaching Colly. He was screaming, goading his opponents in a voice that sounded more desperate than threatening. Suddenly, one of them disappeared.

"I'LL BE THE END OF YOU ALL, YOU BLUE-SKINNED FOOLS! YOU WON'T ESCAPE MY WRA-"

Celeria's eyes widened. The first alien headbutted Colly and as he staggered a few steps back, the other had appeared behind him, running his arm straight through his torso. Suddenly, everything went blank. Celeria felt herself screaming. She felt her hands burying into flesh. She felt herself tearing things apart. Her nostrils were filled with blood and dust. Breathing felt like inhaling razor sharp rocks. When her mind had cleared and she became aware of her surroundings once more, she found herself standing over Colly's limp body. He had coughed up a puddle of blood as Chaya and Zuki rushed to his side. To Celeria's dismay, both of them looked like they were already one foot in the ditch. But it made her proud that, as usual, they didn't show it.

"Steadfast, you two. You've done great. But we're not out of this yet." She attempted to strengthen their morale even though she was finding it increasingly hard to maintain her own.

When the smoke began to clear, she saw that the Colonel too was alive. He was the only one still standing. The rest of his unit was scattered around him. Celeria instantly yelled out:

"Colonel, your son!"

The blue-scaled trooper fought with a ferocity that rivalled some of the toughest enemies Brokka had had the pleasure of obliterating. Left and right he swung, in quick succession, his arms bulged delivered their fury with every passing second, but alas he couldn’t touch the Colonel. Brokka recognised his combatant’s strength, and he understood that should a blow manage to connect, it would damage him. Therefore the Colonel drew back as his enemy persistently pursued him. Deflection, by deflection, Brokka pulled the blue beast away from his support. Soon, he’d have him exactly where he wanted him…

After a few more moments of utilising his diversionary tactics, the Colonel caught the trooper’s fist in his hand. A long smile slithered to his face and his gritted teeth protruded onto his bottom lip. Immediately, Brokka began to apply force to his grip, he heard the blue-scaled warrior cry out in pain as each knuckle shattered in his grasp. Most alarmingly however, was the small issue that the beast never opened its mouth, in fact it had no mouth. The scream was telepathic!

Brokka cried out in fury and drove his head into his enemies face. The trooper recoiled from the brute force of the assault, and the air filled with micro-particles of blood. The enemy didn’t dally for too long of course, and before long he was back on the Colonel’s tail. Brokka dived into the air to avoid the fool’s forward charge, and he summersaulted and landed cleanly free of the attack. The beast quickly turned around again and began a second onslaught. Brokka extended his hand and a large ki blast formed in his palm. Quickly he fired the blast and watched as it detonated on impact with the blue trooper. His scouter bleeped accordingly and read a slight decline in his opponent’s power level.

“He keeps coming… Tough bastard…” The Colonel followed suit and met his opponent head on. He was powerful, but not as powerful as Brokka. As they collided in a fury of fists and energy, the Colonel successfully avoided a flurry of swipes before delivering the finishing blow with an uppercut to the soldier’s jaw. He cried out again, for the second time Brokka felt it in the recesses of his mind. Finally, he fell lifeless to the floor.

“Colonel, we’re being overwhelmed. Do we fall back?” A Saiyan woman said, Brokka turned away from the fallen enemy to face her. She was bloodied to a pulp, her hands were drenched in a mixture of hers and her enemy’s juices, and her face was swollen and contorted.

“No. We persist, I implore the bastards to take me down.” Spat the Colonel. Another two of the blue-scaled troops assaulted Brokka in unison. He quickly back flipped away from the carnage but was too slow to avoid a follow-up attack from the second soldier. The Colonel felt the oxygen suck from his lungs as the enemy buried his fist in his chest. He sharply inhaled but no air would come. That damned bastard was strong, he’d have to be careful. As the enemy attempted a second wave of strikes, Brokka ducked and swiped with his leg. The soldier stumbled to the ground, and as he fell, the Colonel summoned his Earth Cutting Row technique to decapitate him.

Now he had to finish the second one. But it was too late, the Saiyan female who he’d previously spoken with was dead. She lay in a pool of her own blood, her eyes gaping and her jaw snapped in several places… he’d already got to her. This was why Freeza had chosen the Saiyans for this task after all, it was all perfectly clear, they were simply expendable to him. The Colonel grimaced, he inhaled with the full force of his lungs, and the oxygen he felt pass by his throat became steaming hot. Nobody took him for a fool, NOBODY ambushed Colonel Brokka!

“FACE ME!” Brokka shrieked, charging forward at the one who had butchered his underling. As the Colonel came within touching distance, the blue-scaled beast disappeared with super speed. Brokka halted, his scouter blipped in multiple directions, tracking the energy of all the other targets, but it was no good! He needed to find this bastard and he needed to find him now! He closed his eyes, and he extended his senses. He wouldn’t see him coming, he was moving too fast, but maybe he could…

The Colonel detected a distortion in the air and instantly swayed his body to the right. The soldier’s fist missed him by an inch, and the air crackled with electricity that pulsated from his fist. This had gone on too long, it was time to put an end to these games. Brokka responded aptly, he lifted his flat heel and drove it into his adversary’s stomach. He keeled over, his pain cry echoed in the recesses of Brokka’s brain once again. The Colonel quickly summoned a fist full of ki and forced his fist into the back of the bastard’s head. The blue-scaled warrior collided with the ground in a thud, and a haze of blood painted the soil red. With one final ki blast, Brokka had put an end to his life once and for all.

The Colonel then took a moment to collect himself, his heart was racing and his adrenaline was fuelling his lust for battle. He searched the area, looking for Marble, but he could see nobody that resembled a leader of his description. To Brokka’s surprise however, he saw an abundance of one thing. The Saiyan’s he’d led here were dying rapidly, only a few of his team remained, and Celeria’s side wasn’t doing any better. In an instant, it dawned on him… What about…?

“Colonel, your son!” Brokka saw it instantly. Colly had fallen, and he was in the grips of a Saiyan female who looked equally as grim. The Colonel approached his son with super speed, literally disappearing from his previous position, and reappearing at his son’s side. He looked down at Colly blankly. He was a mess, and he was haemorrhaging fast.

“Fa-Father I.” Colly coughed profusely, blood splattered from his mouth and stained his lips. “D-Dying isn’t as… as glorious as I’d thought.” His son’s face contorted in agony, he bit down on his lip drawing blood and squeezed his eyes shut. “I…“ Colly paused, a tremor ran through his voice as he tried to find the strength. “I’m sorry.”

Brokka focused on the pathetic sight of his son stewing in his own remains. He wouldn’t allow this image to fade from his memory anytime soon. He vowed to use this shame to fuel his strength and his fury for Marble and the mission. It took a great deal of restraint, but the Colonel resisted a frown, instead he remained expressionless.

“Save the apology, you fought as I told you to.” He said.

“I, have failed you, like… like, Parcer, Caron, Turnis, Sprew… and…” Colly listed the names of Brokka’s fallen sons and daughters, his voice lost strength as the list continued.

“Failure is not for warriors of my blood.” Brokka fell onto a knee and came closer to his son. He was about to die.

“W-What will… become o-of me?” The question was infamous in its ambiguity, but surely enough Brokka knew the answer. He of course provided his son with the more comforting response.

“You will die.” Brokka said, coldly. “But not in vein. I will continue our legacy, but first I will destroy Marble.”

“Wh-… I-f” Colly’s strength eventually left him until there was nothing left, not a whisper, not even a movement. His eyes glazed over and his expression ran cold. Brokka stood up, looking down on his diseased son. Before he could react any further, one of the blue bastards came flying at him. Without thought, the Colonel utilised his Earth Cutting Row technique and cut him in half. He squealed and fine droplets of blood sprayed over Brokka’s face and armour. He looked at Colly’s corpse and then at the Saiyan holding him. She spoke.

“Colonel, I’m sorry…”

“Save your pity. He never had the makings of a warrior, just like the others.” Of course he referred to his other dead children. “Leave him, and re-join the fight.” Brokka turned his back on his dead son and he felt his rage truly grip at his gut. Marble had embarrassed him. He’d led him here, shamed him by reducing his son to this pile of guts, and worst of all, he still thought he could win. Brokka’s fists trembled with a sudden bust of adrenaline. His energy climbed to its height and he felt more infused than ever before. “Commander, hold the line, there’s more on the way.” From out of the installation, a second wave of blue-scaled soldiers came. But more interestingly, the central pillar of the base began to rumble, and before long everything was clear. It was a ship, the bastard was trying to escape…

Brokka released a powerful roar that resonated for miles. His energy swelled around him in frantic waves and he dived towards the vessel that began to depart. This was the part he was going to enjoy…

For a few moments, Celeria stared blankly. She was speechless and dazed. Here she was, prepared to sacrifice life and limb to ensure the survival of her team, while the Colonel... He seemed to be irked, rather than affected by the death of his own son. The image of Frieza's sadistic smirk flashed in her mind. Celeria realized they were all as expendable to Brokka as they were to Frieza. Her muscles tensed and her fists tightened to the point where she drew her own blood. So this was what King Vegeta had sent her here for. Well, she guessed it was time to live up to her end of the bargain. Or die trying.

She disregarded Brokka and his commands. There was no way these soldiers would last a round with the wave of monsters that were approaching. It was up to her. Whether they all live or die, it was all up to her. Without a word, Celeria spread her legs and lowered her stance, bending her arms at the elbows and grunting under her breath.

"Commander?" Zuki stared at her, eyes widened with surprise while Colly's lifeless body still rested in her lap.

"I've got this." Celeria growled.

"All of you! To me! NOW!" She ordered.

Immediately, the surviving saiyans flocked around the Commander, each looking more confused than the other.

Celeria took a few moments to gather all her remaining energy, waiting for the ring of enemies to close in tighter around them. When her set mark had been hit, she suddenly flung her arms outward and arched her back. Her veins bulged and she breathed heavily. Suddenly, she unleashed a deafening wail, followed by a dramatically expanding burst of concentrated ki. The sphere had exploded in diameter and speed. As it reached the ring of enemies, it's expansion slowed, but it's intensity grew. Celeria's shriek grew louder along with it. The creatures attempted to break through the barrier, but  were effectively disintegrated. Celeria knew she had to push herself one step further. She clenched her outstretched palms into fists and pulled her arms down in one violent heave. The barrier had detonated, leveling the structure, the surroundings, everything except Celeria and her team. What ensued was a thundering, earth-shattering explosion that seemed to have swiped the ground from under their feet.

However, the smoke cleared to reveal that the only patch of ground which had remained intact was the area around the Commander, where the surviving saiyans had been. The surrounding soil was one huge crater, strewn with charred bodies. Celeria's breathing stretched into a rasp as she fell to her knees.

"Commander!" Chaya suddenly snapped to attention and caught Celeria before her drained body smashed against the ground. In a murmur of frightened voices, everything went blank.

It wasn’t long before Brokka was able to break the hull of the cylindrical vessel. With a single hurl of his fist, the Colonel ripped through the metal as if it was butter and tore a Saiyan sized hole right through to the interior. Quickly, he dived into the craft and immediately felt the artificial gravity force him to the ship’s floor. Of course, the ship was travelling diagonally, so technically Brokka was standing on what could be recognised as the wall.

The Colonel dusted himself off as he proceeded. Within a second of him entering the ship, an emergency shield fell over the wound in the hull, preventing of course the ship from burning up when it eventually left the atmosphere. As Brokka traversed the halls he saw nobody, nobody at all, not even a rudimentary soldier guarding entrances to private parts of the vessel. He frowned, Operation Outbound had been elusive from the start, and this wasn’t how he operated. He was putting an end to the ‘hush hush’ nature of this assignment, and he was going to accomplish this by making a great deal of noise. Eventually the Colonel happened upon a central hallway, it was a long drag that led to what looked like the control room. This was where the spineless bastard had to be hiding, and it would double up as his graveyard.

When Brokka reached the entrance he stopped. He had anticipated some sort of trap, but he was willing to spring it regardless. The Colonel tensed his first and without restriction, he unleashed a full force blow on the metal doorway. It churned under his brute strength, and quickly detached from its hinges, hitting the wall at the far end of what was indeed the control room.

“The door wasn’t locked, you could have used the switch.” A shrill voice said. It spoke in a similar manner to how Brokka had heard the blue-scaled soldiers communicating, Marble must have been of the same race.

As the Colonel entered the control room, at the far side he saw a robed man sat at a console. He was indeed blue-scaled, and no doubt Marble himself. But of course, Brokka didn’t care what this fool’s race was, he simply knew that all of his enemies had bled the same way in the end.

“Colonel Brokka, I presume? I read your file, you have a very impressive service record… although, it’s not as adventurous as the stories would have me believe.” Brokka casually strolled into the centre of the bridge, he observed the surroundings. Everything was basic, there were no weapons, just command consoles, and most of the walls were large view screens looking out into the void of space. The Colonel eventually focused on Marble, his words meant absolutely nothing, he simply wanted to bathe in this bastard’s blood, not sit there conversing.

“I did of course anticipate you from the moment we set up our operations on Daris. Freeza knew that what we were searching for was detrimental to his plans, it was only a matter of time before he sent the jewel in his current crown.” Marble intertwined his fingers together and lounged in his seat, he didn’t seem fearful in the slightest, which was his biggest mistake. “Won’t you respond Colonel? I was hoping we could have a sensible chat before all the bloodshed. And, if the right words are spoken, I was also hoping we could avoid the blood part altogether.”

Brokka’s brow raised, and he grunted with impatience. This man had shamed him enough today, he’d already taken his son after placing the Colonel in a trap. “Speak quickly then.” Raising a flat palm, the Colonel began to summon his ki.

“You’re wasting your time. I’m no warrior… Is that what your Intel told you? That I was some kind of space crime lord? I’m a scientist, defeating me with your crude methods will bring you no honour.” Marble stood from his chair and casually approached Brokka, stopping before he came too close.

“Oh, I’m not the honourable kind, I’m sure you’ll soon discover…” The Colonel maliciously grinned, however, Marble’s words had come as a great surprise. What did Freeza want with a scientist? Why had he sent the Saiyans after a scientific expeditionary? He didn’t like this at all. Ki began to form in his fingertips.

“If honour isn’t your forte then perhaps you’ll listen to reason? You see Freeza sent you here not because my people pose a real threat to him in our current form… Of course not, the very idea is preposterous. He sent you here because he knows the Saiyans are mindless in their approach to destruction, you wouldn’t think too hard on the meaning behind the mission, and you’d simply crush us first and ask questions later.”

Brokka sniggered and suddenly it turned into a full cackle. “You know us better than I thought…” The Colonel continued to laugh mockingly.

“Charmed. But Freeza chose the Saiyans to destroy us because he didn’t want me to uncover the Nemus Vires… a weapon of incomprehensible power…” Marble extended his hand, it was almost as if he was pleading. “The kind of power that I realised you would no doubt wish to covet. And of course, I have no issues with the Saiyan race possessing the weapon, I simply wish to use it to destroy Freeza and his organisation.”

The ki energy stopped growing in Brokka’s grasp. His attention had peaked, and Marble had managed to stall him for the time being. The Colonel’s eyes scanned the control room again, there was no object that resembled a weapon of this description, he frowned. “What kind of weapon is this? Tell me, tell me NOW.”

“It is a natural weapon, I’m sure you’ve heard of it, but under a different name. In your tongue it is called the Tree of Might.”

Brokka’s eyes enlarged, his hand wavered for a moment but managed to stay on its target. The Tree of Might? That was a legend, surely?

“From your face I am safe to assert that you know it, yes? The tree that grows fruit that can amplify the ki of any warrior, I have been tracing this weapon for years, I’ve travelled to worlds ravaged by the tree over and over. You see, that’s what happens. The tree can grow only on worlds that are lush and young enough to provide sustenance. When it grows it immediately feeds on the planet’s core and destroys the eco system. That’s why I was on Daris with my people. It was a previous sight that the tree had been harvested. There we found the seed…”

“You found a… seed?” The Colonel could hardly believe what he was hearing. The Tree of Might was a legend! This couldn’t be true!

“Yes. It was difficult to uncover, it was dispersed in the planet’s core, but with my own ingenuity and the help of the surviving members of my race, I extracted it. Of course, it’s still in testing but I have it here with me, on the ship.” Marble pressed a button on his utility belt and a panel on the wall opened. Suddenly a metal contraption emerged and hissed with smoke as the cap unbolted. As the smoke faded, a pebble like object was visible. Brokka focused on it for a second and then back at Marble.

“Simple enough, I’ll destroy you and take the seed for myself. If your story is false then I still win, if it has merit, then all the better…” Finally the ki erupted from his fingers again, this time he was going to finish this.

“Don’t be a fool! I knew you were coming! I could have ran long before your arrival but I stayed. I invited you in, so that you could join me. The Saiyan race is already powerful, and they are battle hardened, imagine what we could achieve together? Freeza could be destroyed in an instant with the power of the tree. You need my help, to identify suitable worlds for planting, you cannot do this alone.” Shouted Marble frantically, he moved closer to Brokka as if he had no fear of the ki pointed at his face. “Freeza is a threat to us all, to the entire universe…”

“You’re right.” Brokka sniggered again, “Freeza is a threat, and somebody has to stop him eventually. But…” He fell silent, he raised a finger from his free hand and waved it teasingly “You killed my son, and shamed me by drawing me into a trap. Because of that, I cannot allow you to live.” Brokka continued laughing and launched the ball of energy into Marble’s chest. His cried out in the recesses of the Colonel’s brain and he fell against the console. Already, he was bleeding.

“Fool! Think about what you’re doing. I watched my world burn at the hands of Freeza, he’ll surely do the same to planet Vegeta in time. Just wait, eventually he’s tire of the Saiyans, and your time will come. You will be helpless to stop him, as was I…”

Brokka steamed towards Marble and lifted him up by the skull. He flung him again to the other side of the control room, he landed on a console, cracking the interface. The room dimmed, and shined in a red light, sirens were now sounding.

“I will enjoy slaughtering you. The more helpless the better…” The Colonel lowered his head and his grin widened, all the while he leisurely approached Marble.

“No, I won’t let you continue.” Marble extracted a switch from his belt, Brokka halted in his place. Was he going to detonate the ship? “Do you think I am fool? Your allies are still on the planet’s surface, and the core is still rigged with the machinery used to extract the seed. I can detonate that machinery and the whole planet will explode. It’s just the touch of a button away… you kill me and I kill your allies.”

Brokka remained still, he looked out at the view screen and saw that they were now in space. Down on the surface was the Commander, and the other surviving troops, still fighting for all Brokka knew. But of course, he had already assumed them dead. None of his entourage had possessed the power to survive such a large ambush. Celeria had been sufficient enough in strength, but alone, even she was no doubt unable to survive. It was only a second’s thought, and his decision had been made.

“Great warriors are forced in the flames of war.” Brokka uttered confidently, “It is the honour of the lesser warriors to die in those flames.” The Colonel marched towards Marble with relentless fury in his eyes. The blue-scaled scientist scrambled for the button, but before he could press it Brokka placed a boot on his hand.

“You’re insane. If you crush my hand you’ll also detonate the switch. They’re your people, you can’t let them die, why else have you come here to stop me? Is it not to avenge your son – to avenge the deaths of your fallen?”

“Fool. Do you think I became a leader through compassion, through a connection to my people? There is only one prize worth coveting, and that’s victory. And I will seize it all ALL costs.” Brokka shrieked and forced his boot down on Marble’s hand. The switch activated and a countdown on the ship’s computers began. Seven minutes until the planet exploded? That was too long, he wanted all signs of Marble’s men eradicated from the universe this instant!

Brokka gripped the frantic scientist by the hand and lifted him until he was eye height. He could sense the fear in the man, and it fuelled him further. Then, gripping his body with a second hand the Colonel tore him in two directions until his arm detached entirely from its socket.

“AAAAAAAARH!” He screamed out telepathically, as Brokka launched his gooey appendage out of reach.

“Perhaps you’ll think twice before shaming me again?” He sniggered and dropped Marble to the floor. Then, the Colonel grabbed the scientists head and positioned it to look at the view screen.

“You’re a monster, you’re everything I worked to destroy. I-I… Cannot let you leave with the seed. You’d be a tyrant just like Freeza!”

The Colonel leaned in close to Marble’s ear and whispered as they both looked down on Daris for the final time.

“It’s a shame you won’t see it burn.” And with that Brokka gripped the scientists head and snapped it in two directions. Bones quickly protruded from his collar and blood sprayed everywhere. Marble was dead, and the seed was his to take.

In the moments that followed, the Colonel watched as Daris ignited. It lit up the view screen artistically, before diming to a faint crimson hue. The mission had been completed, and now it was time to contact Zarbon.

"What are we going to do now?"

"Is the mission over?"

"Did we win?"

"The Commander won."

"But she's dead. How is death winning?"

"She's not dead, you idiot."

Chatter of familiar voices. And suddenly, a blaring noise coming from her scouter, resonating through the other devices surrounding her.

"The heck is that?"

"Is it an alarm?"

Celeria moved her dry lips weakly.

"Shut up, the lot of you!" Zuki yelled out.

"Warning... magnetic field... interference... planet..."

"Hey, she IS alive!"

"I said shut up!" Zuki leaned in closer, visibly annoyed.

"Emergency... planet... evac." Celeria spaced out of consciousness again.

"Emergency planet evac? Why?"

"Because it's going to blow the fuck up, you idiot."

"But no one's firing anything!"

"We can't exactly risk it!"

"We're going back to the ship. We're done here, anyway." Zuki stated decisively. "Chaya, give me a hand."

The two soldiers lifted the unconscious Commander onto their shoulders. The seven warriors slowly took off the ground and flew towards the ship. As they progressed, the reasons for the warning became more apparent. The sky had begun to go dark and the earth had cracked in places, no doubt the plates had already started shifting.

"Looks like the scouters weren't kidding."

"But what triggered it?"

"Who cares what triggered it, let's just get the hell out of here!"

"You don't have to tell me twice."

The flight got progressively more difficult. Within minutes, springs of molten rock shot from the ground. The group accelerated their flight and soon enough reached their battered, albeit functional spaceship. They all flew inside quickly. After making sure the Commander was secure in the med bay, Zuki ran to the main control room, triggering the ignition switch. The spaceship was automated, programmed to fly back to the homeworld without a pilot. As Zuki hit the button, the blasting of the motors instantly sounded. They had begun their ascent off the planet, and with good timing. They were out of the danger zone by a matter of seconds before the planet blew up. The shockwave from the explosion rattled the old vessel, but they got through, much to the relief of the ship's broken and battered passengers.

The ship climbed further and further away from the rubble of the ex-planet Daris. Brokka approached the console and deactivated the sirens that whaled into the control room. Then he approached the seed, he picked it up with his fingers and stroked the smooth surface.

“To think such an insignificant object could possess such potential.” He grinned, his smile lingered as he placed the seed beneath his breastplate. Now he had to figure out how to harvest the fruit… he had to find a planet able to sustain the Tree of Might, and he had to find allies that could assist him. The operation could take years of course, the Colonel would have to acquire a trusted team, and he’d have to operate below the radar of both Freeza and King Vegeta. Furthermore he needed specialists, he needed the seed analysing, and he needed to find the right planet. This could surely be a laborious task but Brokka was patient. He’d fought a civil war back home that had required copious amounts of patience to win. He’d worked tirelessly within the Saiyan armada to climb the ranks and become the greatest warrior of the entire legion… He could wait a little longer for the plans to fall into place.

The Colonel was about to activate his scouter to open a channel to Zarbon, when suddenly he received a transmission. How bizarre, he thought, knowing exactly who it was.

“Congratulations Colonel…” A familiar giggling droned down his ear. “…On a job well done.”

“Thank you, Lord Zarbon.” Brokka’s voice was cautious, how had Zarbon been aware of his victory? Had he been watching the whole time? Did he already know about the seed?

“You never fail to please. Lord Freeza is satisfied with your progress. Daris had been a thorn in his side for far too long, it had to disappear sooner or later. Speaking of the disappearance… Nice touch with the total destruction of the planet. Marble’s forces will never rise to challenge our organisation again, they will be remembered as failures for an eternity.” Zarbon continued giggling, and Brokka gritted his teeth. He was tired of this flamboyant right-hand of Freeza, when he accumulated the right amount of power, Zarbon would be the first to choke on a pool of his own blood. The Colonel restricted his rage and neutralised his voice.

“Success is my trade Lord Zarbon, I never fail.”

“Yes, and you will be rewarded indeed.” The giggling continued unabated. And suddenly Brokka’s eyes widened in apprehension. From out of the void of space a large PTO saucer appeared, it couldn’t be… it was! “We would like to invite you aboard for a very special gift… Don’t dally.” The transmission ended, but Brokka was still reeling. This was not possible, Freeza’s reach seemed to be infinite. Why had he been so close to the Daris System?

Brokka of course did as instructed, he opened a hatch with the PTO capital ship and transferred to the grand vessel. He didn’t know what to expect, he was dubious, but somewhere at the periphery of his mind, he understood who he was about to hold an audience with. As the Colonel passed through the dark hallways he saw droves and droves of guards saluting in perfect unison. He moved through in utter silence, nobody spoke or blinked. This could only be the ship of one person…

Eventually he reached the bridge, and the doors opened slowly to reveal a large circular control room. The Colonel entered cautiously, he kept his head low and he did his best to observe his surrounds. There, at the far end of the room, looking out onto the view screen was a small being in a levitating chair. Brokka stopped, he could see nobody else, not even Zarbon.

“Hehehe…” The being in the chair sniggered coldly, a shiver travelled the length of Brokka’s spine and he didn’t know why. “I’m impressed, truly. I never imagined the Saiyans to be of much use, but it seems I gravely underestimated you.”

Slowly the chair rotated, and Brokka’s uneasiness amplified. There, in his throne, was no other than Freeza himself. The Colonel quickly fell to one knee and lowered his head respectfully. This was completely unexpected, he didn’t know what to say.

“Lord Freeza, it is an honour…” He finally said, after silence forced a response.

“The honour is all yours.” Freeza quickly responded. “I must admit, I more than certainly expected failure. I followed the progress of the mission quite closely, imagine my surprise when I saw the whole planet go up in flames… AHA!” The overlord’s voice filled with glee, he seemed ecstatic, he obviously approved. “Marble and his insignificant band of fools had been a thorn in my side for some time now. I of course could have dealt with this little situation myself, but such tasks are beneath me, I’m sure you’ll agree Colonel?”

“Of course, Lord Freeza.” Brokka kept his responses brief, he could think of no conversation to have with the overlord.

“Tell me then, how was it, killing him? Did he squirm and beg? Did you trample on him like a maggot, or was the execution slower…?” Sadism rang through Freeza’s voice, he was every bit as nasty as Brokka had been informed.

“He tried to resist me, Lord Freeza. But his efforts were futile. I made him suffer before finishing him quickly. Destruction of his world was a necessary precaution, there could be no survivors.” Brokka looked up, for the first time he looked Freeza dead in the eyes. The overlord’s eyes were crimson and enthralling, they invited Brokka in falsely, it felt as if everything about Freeza was a cunning trap.

“Well done, that’s all I brought you here to say… hehehe.” Freeza continued in his amusement.

“I was trained to destroy my enemies, Lord Freeza.” Brokka bowed again.

“Except for one of course. The woman you arrived with. She survived… she’s returning to planet Vegeta as we speak. She was an enemy was she not? Or did I not make myself clear on my stance towards imposters?” The overlord’s voice held in it no anger, but his words spoke louder than their tone. Brokka was deeply impressed, but completely surprised. How had the Commander survived? The numbers against her were overwhelming, and the planet had been detonated. He would have smirked but this was not the time or the place. Freeza had obviously expected the Colonel to destroy the Commander, this much was obvious.

“I apologise Lord Freeza, I was not on the surface when the planet initiated its detonation. I assumed my team had also perished.”

“No matter, a monkey is a monkey, hehehe. I spoke of a reward did I not? Rise then, General.” General? Had Freeza intended to call Brokka General? He couldn’t believe what he was hearing, but he wasn’t fighting it. Brokka climbed to his feet and placed both of hands behind his back.

“General, Lord Freeza?”

“Yes of course. I need somebody to keep an eye on King Vegeta, don’t I? When Freeza is away, the monkeys will play. And we can’t have King Vegeta doing anything he shouldn’t now can we? You will be in charge of Vegeta’s protection General. You will represent my presence on his little War Council, and you will speak with Zarbon regularly.” A promotion? This couldn’t have come at a better time. Brokka needed the resources from this higher stature now more than ever. He could use the legions to his advantage, he could lead expeditionaries to unknown regions and hide out of the reach of Freeza and King Vegeta. He would be able to harvest the tree after all! But of course, there was something grave about this situation, and it was the consequences of being in Freeza’s shadow. He was effectively going to be looming over the King as the hand of Freeza, Vegeta would never trust him again. From now on, Brokka had to operate with complete secrecy.

“Thank you Lord Freeza, I WILL succeed.”

“Yes you will, General Brokka.”

The aged vessel glided slowly through the darkness of space. The warriors inside felt as if they were on a ghost ship. While Zuki was busying herself with the ship's controls, three warriors sat together in the common room. Despite their rowdy nature, they were silent. Most of them barely lifted their eyes off the ground. They were all experienced fighters, but they had never faced enemies as powerful as the creatures from Daris. Each of them did their best to tend to their wounds, given that the vessel had only one healing tank. Placing the Commander into it was a unanimous decision. Some of them had no idea what made them decide, as they all more or less suffered grave wounds. They all seemed to agree, however, that if it weren't for the Commander, grave wounds would be the last thing on their minds.

"Hey Chaya, have you been saved before?" One of the soldiers asked.

"Not me." Chaya shook his head.

"I didn't even know we were supposed to save squad mates. I mean, someone always draws the wildcard, but I thought, hey, tough luck. But it sure is tough being the one drawing that wildcard." Another soldier observed.

After a while, Zuki came in to the room. She hadn't had time to take care of her injuries, so she grabbed one of the medkits, sat next to Chaya and started bandaging her wounds.

"I've got the ship running. Amazingly enough, I was able to get more speed out of her. We should arrive to the home world in half the time it took us to get to Daris." Zuki explained.

"I guess it's 'cause we're much lighter now." Chaya added, chuckling ironically.

"Man, did you see what happened back there? Did you see those things? None of the creatures I ever faced were able to scratch me. And those guys... I was barely able to follow their movements." One of the soldiers began.

"I know, right? Just what the fuck were those things?" The other added.

"You gotta hand it to the Commander. I don't know where she got that much power." Zuki said.

"I think I do." One of the soldiers said, before continuing "I've heard of Commander Celeria. They say she always trains. A buddy of mine used to be in a team with her. He told me the girl was messed up. I mean, we all love to fight, right? But Celeria, she takes it to a whole new level. Opponents, no opponents, she's always fighting."

"I don't know, man... I can't get myself to spend more than an hour in those training chambers. There's no drive, no blood, nothing to get me going." The other soldier began.

And suddenly they chattered away, seemingly forgetting their recent troubles, until one of them remembered:

"Hey, what about the Colonel? We completely forgot about him!" He exclaimed.

"Last thing I saw, he was on Marble's ship. Who knows if he lived or not. Not like we were in any position to find out." Chaya said.

"Whatever. He gives me the creeps. His son was dying a gruesome death right there and he acted like it was a minor setback." Zuki shook her head.

"Man, I can't wait to get back to the planet... I'm going back to doing team PTO errands again, fuck these high-ranking assignments."

"You don't have to tell me twice."

---

She heard liquid bubbling, followed by the familiar sound of a healing tank draining. Celeria opened her eyes to the interior of the med bay. She was alive. Removing her oxygen mask, she stepped out of the tank onto the cold steel floor. Celeria breathed in deeply and exhaled slowly. She had never been quite so close to death before. But how did she make it? The last thing she remembered was releasing the energy barrier.

Celeria quickly dried herself off and donned a new set of armor, before heading to the common room. When she got there, she came upon four soldiers who were sleeping peacefully. So they had saved her. The thought warmed her heart and drew a smile to her lips. As she proceeded into the room, they all opened their weary eyes.

"Commander!" Zuki greeted her with a smile.

"Sleeping on duty, eh? What a sorry lot! I'll have to report you to the King as soon as we land." Celeria grinned before turning her eyes to Chaya, whose injuries seemed the worst out of the four. She approached him and flung one of his arms over her shoulder, gently gripping him around the waist. "Come on buddy, it's your turn. Lord knows that gash on your head can only bleed so much."

"Hah, you said it, Commander." Chaya cracked a half-smile.

Before they exited the common room, Celeria turned to face the other three warriors once more.

"You all did remarkably down there. The fact that you're alive here now is a testament to your worth as saiyan warriors." She spoke to them, her voice swelling with pride and respect.

"And yours, Commander." Zuki said, and the other two soldiers and Chaya nodded in unison.

Celeria's subtle grin drew into a warm smile as she nodded back to them, before turning on her heel and taking Chaya to the med bay. After him, came Zuki and then the other two soldiers. Celeria had carried each of them to the med bay and supervised their regeneration process.

At one point, she asked about the Colonel. The response she got was in accordance with her own feelings on the matter. Given that he left them all for dead, she didn't care much about his own survival. Though Celeria could bet he was still alive. She felt it in her gut. Just like she knew she would see more of him, sooner than she cared to.

After three days, the five warriors were all fully healed. When she was done attending to the injuries of her squad mates, Celeria wrote a detailed full report on the mission, which she would hand over to King Vegeta personally. Not long after she finished writing it, the landing sirens sounded. The ship was on automatic pilot, so the five warriors immediately headed towards the exit. The landing was smooth and easy and the doors hissed open to reveal an entourage of medical staff waiting for them. King Vegeta was also there, visibly displeased.

The warriors exited the vessel with heavy steps, before bending down on one knee, all saluting his majesty. The King nodded at them, and the four warriors each went with a medical officer. They would all have to undergo the obligatory medical screening. Celeria rose to her feet and approached the King, handing over the data pad containing her report. The King glanced over it quickly and his eyes were soon teeming with outrage.

"This is a serious accusation, Commander." He grunted.

"It is the truth, your Highness." Celeria spoke coldly.

"Do you really expect me to accept conclusions based on mere speculation?!" He growled.

"Your Majesty, I was sent to Daris as your personal agent. It was my job to monitor the mission and report my findings. What will be done with them is entirely up to your Highness to decide." Celeria remained collected. "I am here to advise you, not instruct you. Your Highness."

King Vegeta seemed as though he was lost in thought for a few moments. An aura of desperation emanated from him. He cleared his throat and added:

"You have done well, Celeria. I will see to it personally that you are commended for your efforts. Dismissed."

Celeria saluted and made her way into the interior of the military building. A medical officer had led her into an examination capsule in the med bay. Celeria laid down and closed her eyes, as the laser scanner examined her physique. She tried to relax for the sake of her heart rate during the examination, she knew the data needed to be as close to the natural state as possible. But in her mind, she was constantly going over the previous mission. Why was the intel false? What had Marble been hiding? How come Brokka never made it back off of Marble's ship? What did he find there? She needed answers. She was determined to extract them from the Colonel by any means necessary.

"You will have to revise your mission particulars for the coming months, Commander." The medic commented.

"What was that?" Celeria darted an eyebrow at him. She was unsure if she heard him correctly.

"You are gravid, Commander. Considering your vitals, the estimated gestation period is three months."

Celeria's eyes widened. She said nothing. Her throat was tightened with outrage and disbelief.

“General Brokka, you are hereby tasked with the defence of the King himself, your life, your years and even your pride belong to our Sire…” The King’s guard spoke solemnly, his voice echoing with self-righteousness and authority.

Brokka rose from the ground and dipped his head as a sign of reverence to the crown, and after a moment he approached the throne. King Vegeta frowned (his typical disposition) and he remained silent until the newly ordained General reached the small staircase leading to his throne. Again, Brokka bowed his head, openly wearing his submission to Vegeta. Of course, it was what was expected of him…

“Congratulations… General. Freeza’s aids inform me that Operation Outbound was a success.” The frown intensified, directly contradicting the words that he spoke. “They also inform me that you’ll be working closer with Freeza in the future. And of course that Freeza himself advises that you be in charge of my personal protection…” The King’s voice was relentless in its delivery of his rage. His tone trembled with the anger that dripped from each word, he was… displeased.

“All of this only to serve you, of course, your majesty.” He chose his words wisely, he couldn’t be seen to be too closely associated with Freeza, it could compromise his very plans.

“Yes, well… I accept Freeza’s proposal.” He had little choice. “But you do not command my armies entirely, do I make myself damned clear? General Nappa has the newly appointed position as guardian of my heirs. He is the sole protector of my new born son, Vegeta, the future King. As a result, Nappa’s role is much more vital, so he shall remain as grand commander. You shall be his second in command.”

Brokka had expected nothing less, and wanted nothing more. Being the leader of the entire military was too constricting, the magnifying glass would simply have been too attuned to his movements and whereabouts. He had to keep a level of anonymity, and he had to play Vegeta and Freeza perfectly. Whilst he maintained links to the overlord, Vegeta would be too afraid to control him, and whilst he was General of the Saiyan army, he would be relevant enough to Freeza that he would not be deemed expendable. The General bowed, and finally he was dismissed.
---

Brokka entered the palace training area, and watched as the palace guard and barrack soldiers trained. He was more than willing to get involved, in fact he needed a good training session… but of course he only let his enemies see him fight. He was here for another reason entirely. That reason was in the form of a green haired lazarus Commander that was quite difficult to kill. He smiled, as he searched through the droves of trainees until finally he found what he was looking for. It was surprising what information was available to him as a General, and how easily it had been for him to track Celeria’s whereabouts. He moved through the training room and made himself visible. Eventually he leaned against the wall and crossed his arms, his eyes said it all. He had a proposition to make.

After her checkup in the medbay, Celeria headed straight for the training chamber. Right now, even breathing provoked rage within her. With every breath, she sustained and strengthened his blood within her. However, the Commander did her best to shut such thoughts out of her mind. Inside her was another saiyan warrior, as vital to the military as any, given their dire circumstances. But despite Celeria's best efforts, she felt like bashing her head against the wall until everything that had transpired seeped out. Her heavy footsteps resonated through the corridor and the expression on her face made other soldiers that passed by move a little closer to the other side of the wall.

Eventually, she made it to the training grounds. The massive chamber was already occupied but luckily, a secluded corner was still available to her. Celeria promptly fastened weights around her arms and legs and began, first with a set of exercises to increase her heart rate. Though she soon found that her heart rate was already at an enviable pace, so she moved on to strength exercises before finally focusing on martial formations.

Even though she was concentrated on her technique, she could still detect the appearance of her favorite presence on the home world, as soon as he drew near enough. For a moment, Celeria's mind went blank as she turned around and threw a punch aimed directly at the Colonel's head that eventually ended up buried into the wall, a few inches from its original target. The Commander stared into the Colonel's eyes with a look of murderous intent. Her skin glistened with perspiration as she exhaled through her mouth, slowly.

Celeria then cracked a smile and withdrew her hand from the wall.

"Why Colonel, I did not see you. I really do apologize. These weights make tempering my strikes surprisingly hard." The smile lingered on her lips as she stretched her neck to one side and then to the other.

"However did you survive Daris? We ourselves barely made it out." Celeria inquired with a genuinely curious expression on her face.

The General instinctively moved his head at the sight of the Commander’s fist. He was as agile as ever, and it nearly forced his own reaction, but instead he was amused. Brokka’s eyes interrogated Celeria’s face, she was finding it difficult to compose herself again. She often exhibited this sort of physiological response around him, if he didn’t know any better he’d say he had her goad. The General grinned, he above anybody enjoyed power, but this power, it was too appealing to surrender.

“A tip. Open your eyes Commander. I hitched a ride with Marble when he departed the installation. We were clear of the system when I made the decision to blow the planet, of course I survived.” The General’s grin widened, the corners of his mouth creased into his cheeks. Her heart was beating fast too, he could hear it. “I thought you’d perished like the rest of the unit. Your survival was an unexpected surprise… you’re more elusive than others who’ve served me.” He pushed himself off of the wall and began to saunter around the Commander. She remained static, simply listening. “You’ve proven that you have some ability… So join me, there is an assignment of my very own that could use a warrior such as you…” He stopped pacing, and allowed the gravity of his proposal to take weight on the Commander. What an honour he had extended to one previously so small…

Celeria followed the Colonel with her eyes as he circled around her. Funnily enough, she didn't feel cornered. To the contrary, it seemed as if she was the locus of the entire universe. Oh, how servile the Colonel could be when he needed something. She waited for him to finish his little tirade. Admittedly, she was a bit surprised that he had approached her with the question so intimately. Too bad for him, though, Celeria had no intention of obliging, more so given the secret she had to keep. The Commander wasn't about to give another saiyan warrior up for the slaughter. When the Colonel finished, a chuckle escaped Celeria's lips.

"What an outstanding honor. One would be a fool to even think of refusing. However..."

Celeria approached the Colonel, lowering her voice as the smirk faded from her lips into a look of solid determination.

"Unfortunately for you, however, my eyes are open. I know full well we were sent there to die. But oh, not you, Colonel. No, pardon me, General. The planet had detonated after you had left its orbit. And I, for one, do not believe in coincidence."

"As to your proposition..."

Her voice became more intense the closer she drew to him, turning almost into a low growl.

"... I find that working for one expedient tyrant is quite enough."

After giving him a last condescending and revolted look, she turned on her heel and began walking to the training chamber exit, throwing her weights aside.

His smile contracted no sooner than it had formed. Insubordination! Who was this Commander Celeria anyway? A nobody, a low class piece of dirt that had climbed to the palace on the back of her superiors’ boots. Brokka’s eyes followed her as she left with an enraging casual amble. The General never wore his emotions so openly, but his outrage simmered below his blank exterior. This nobody, this bitch had just made a very powerful enemy. Of course this wasn’t the end of the General’s plans, on the contrary, this was a new direction. If the tiny Commander wouldn’t join him, if the bitch couldn’t see past her blind loyalty to a puppet king, and her sense of duty to the service of fools, then she would die like the rest.

Brokka’s fury eventually subsided, he hadn’t realised it but his fist had been knotted so tight in anger that a pool of blood had accumulated below him. He opened his palm and inspected the gashes. He laughed, at first quietly and then more manically. He had managed to shed not a single drop of his own blood during Operation Outbound, yet here he was, bleeding now because of the audacity of a sheep that dared stray too far from the shepherd. The soldiers in the training room had stopped training, and now some were blatantly staring at the General. He continued to smile as he marched past each warrior. Those who came particularly close to him were barged out of the way, some even hurtling to the floor.

“If that’s the game you want to play Commander, then consider this your head start.” He whispered to himself, sniggering along as he left the training room. Now he would plan, and soon he would rise.

Celeria had returned to her quarters, still visibly shaken. She sat herself down on the bed and slowed her breathing with great effort. Now more than ever, she needed focus. She couldn't act upon her instincts. The silhouette of the Colonel's face met her behind her closed eyelids. A face she could neither afford to strike nor to embrace, even though she found she yearned for both in equal measure.

She let herself fall back onto the cold steel wall behind her, leaning her head back upon it. For a moment, she regretted not accepting the King's proposal for a higher rank. Maybe it would have given her access to sufficient influence to keep the beast at bay. But she couldn't accept. Not now, when titled had become trinkets given out by a monster to other monsters. She would just have to make due with what she had. But Celeria found that this was fine. She had her team and her own power. These two things had been enough to see her through every challenge she met.

She rose from her seat and walked over to the bathroom cubicle. The Commander looked upon her reflection in the mirror and grabbed a utility laser blade. Moments later, locks of her silken viridian hair fell limply to the ground. She then opened a small container, taking out two golden earrings, the last of her family treasures. Now, that she had tasted death, she would be allowed to wear the full set. As one last touch, she ran over her lips with smooth red paste. She was a warrior, a commander of the saiyan race. Celeria gazed at herself, certain of the fact that, no matter what came her way, her strength and her saiyan pride would prevail.
